What is factory remote start?
Remote start is a feature that is becoming more and more popular. It is becoming a standard feature with luxury manufacturers. The feature allows the driver to start their vehicle remotely (ie. from inside the house). Depending on the year and trim of the vehicle, there are two ways this can be done. With the original keyfob or with a smartphone.

How to use Factory Remote Start on GMC Acadia, Canyon, Savana, Sierra, Terrain, & Yukon?
To start your vehicle using the factory remote start, if equipped, aim the keyless entry remote transmitter at the vehicle. Then press the Lock button and then hold down the remote start button for at least 2 seconds. The turn signal lights will flash and the vehicle will startup. While the vehicle is running the doors will be locked and the parking lights will be on. The vehicle will run for 10 minutes then turn off on its own. You can extend the remote start for another 10 minutes by repeated the step above (press lock then hold remote start for 2 seconds.) To cancel a remote start, press the remote start button for 2 seconds without preceding it with the lock button. To drive the vehicle while it is running, insert the key in the ignition and turn to run position. Then you can move the shifter out of the park position and drive away.

This may be helpful:

  • Remote start is standard equipment on the highest level trims and optional on others.
  • Laws in some communities may restrict the use of remote starters. Check your local regulations.
  • Don’t use remote start if the vehicle is low on fuel.
  • The run time extension mentioned earlier can only work if it is the first remote start since the vehicle has been driven.

Remote start via APP
Some newer GMC vehicles are equipped with the ability to control the remote start via the Onstar App or myGMC apps. Since the apps work via satellite instead of radio waves, distance isn’t relevant. You could remote start your vehicle from around the world if you wanted to.
